ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANAGEMENT

Plug-in vehicles will appear on showroom floors this year. Soon they will be on the road and connecting to the grid to refuel. Leading auto manufacturers representing over 70 percent of the auto market, including General Motors, Nissan and Ford, have announced plans for plug-in vehicles. Fall 2010 marks the start of the electric transportation revolution.

Is the grid ready?
While it has served us remarkably well, the electric grid is over 100 years old. Our aging distribution system is most stressed at the edges. With plug-in vehicle ownership likely to cluster in residential pockets, the new charging load will be concentrated where grid reliability is typically most tenuous. In some neighborhoods, even a few vehicles charging during the evening peak could disrupt service.
